In modern radar systems, wideband radars are becoming more and more important, while the angle estimation for wideband signals is little studied in previous works. As noise in wideband radars has larger bandwidth than narrowband radars, the challenge lies in the accumulation of energy from the high resolution range profile (HRRP) of monopulse. In wideband radars, linear frequency modulated (LFM) signals are frequently utilized. In this paper, we investigate the monopulse angle estimation problem for wideband LFM signals. To accumulate the energy of the received echo signals from different scatterers of a target, we propose utilizing a cross-correlation operation, which can achieve a good performance in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. In the proposed algorithm, the problem of angle estimation is converted to estimating the frequency of the cross-correlation function (CCF). Experimental results demonstrate the similar performance of the proposed algorithm compared with the traditional amplitude comparison method. It means that the proposed method for angle estimation can be adopted. When adopting the proposed method, future radars may only need wideband signals for both tracking and imaging, which can greatly increase the data rate and strengthen the capability of anti-jamming. More importantly, the estimated angle will not become ambiguous under an arbitrary angle, which can significantly extend the estimated angle range in wideband radars.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s16060817","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,6,3]],"date-time":"2016-06-03T10:37:37Z","timestamp":1464950257000},"page":"817","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":30,"title":["A Novel Monopulse Angle Estimation Method for Wideband LFM Radars"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"16","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0879-3298","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yi-Xiong","family":"Zhang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Communication Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Qi-Fan","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Communication Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Ru-Jia","family":"Hong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Communication Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Ping-Ping","family":"Pan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Communication Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Zhen-Miao","family":"Deng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Communication Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,6,3]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"452","DOI":"10.1109\/7.937461","article-title":"Monopulse DOA estimation of two unresolved Rayleigh targets","volume":"37","author":"Blair","year":"2001","journal-title":"IEEE Trans.
