Notably, grassland fires occur frequently each year in northeastern China. Fire occurrence is a complex problem with multiple causes, such as natural factors, human activities and land use. This paper investigates the disruptive effects of grassland fire in the northeastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. In this study, we relied on thermal anomaly detection from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor to identify fire occurrences, and land use data were acquired by Landsat Thematic Mapper\/Enhanced Thematic Mapper (TM\/ETM). We discussed the relationship between land use and the spatial distribution of grassland fires. The results showed that the impact of land use on grassland fires was significant. Spatially, approximately 80% of grassland fires were clustered within 10 km of cultivated land, and grassland fires generally occurred in areas of intense human activity. The correlation between the spatial distribution of grassland fires and the land use degree in 2000, 2005 and 2010 was high, with R2 values of 0.686, 0.716, 0.633, respectively (p < 0.01). These results highlight the importance of the relationship between land use and grassland fire occurrence in the northeastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This study provides significance for local fire management and prevention.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s17030437","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,2,23]],"date-time":"2017-02-23T11:45:01Z","timestamp":1487850301000},"page":"437","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":25,"title":["The Influence of Land Use on the Grassland Fire Occurrence in the Northeastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"17","author":[{"given":"Yiping","family":"Li","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Provincial Laboratory of Resources and Environmental Research for Northeast China, Northeast Normal University, Changchun 130024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0336-5764","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jianjun","family":"Zhao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Provincial Laboratory of Resources and Environmental Research for Northeast China, Northeast Normal University, Changchun 130024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8651-615X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Xiaoyi","family":"Guo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Provincial Laboratory of Resources and Environmental Research for Northeast China, Northeast Normal University, Changchun 130024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9949-7114","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Zhengxiang","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Provincial Laboratory of Resources and Environmental Research for Northeast China, Northeast Normal University, Changchun 130024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Gang","family":"Tan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Jilin Surveying and Planning Institute of Land Resources, Changchun 130061, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jihong","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Jilin Surveying and Planning Institute of Land Resources, Changchun 130061, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,2,23]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","first-page":"1","article-title":"Go Forward the 21st Century\u2019s Chinese Grassland Resources","volume":"5","author":"Xu","year":"1998","journal-title":"Grassl.
