However, because of their inherent openness, VSNs are subject to a large number of potential security threats. Although various authentication schemes have been proposed for addressing security problems, they are not suitable for VSN applications because of their high computation and communication costs. Chuang and Lee have developed a trust-extended authentication mechanism (TEAM) for vehicle-to-vehicle communication using a transitive trust relationship, which they claim can resist various attacks. However, it fails to counter internal attacks because of the utilization of a shared secret key. In this paper, to eliminate the vulnerability of TEAM, an enhanced privacy-preserving authentication scheme for VSNs is constructed. The security of our proposed scheme is proven under the random oracle model based on the assumption of the computational Diffie\u2013Hellman problem.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s17122854","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,12,8]],"date-time":"2017-12-08T11:37:40Z","timestamp":1512733060000},"page":"2854","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":27,"title":["An Enhanced Privacy-Preserving Authentication Scheme for Vehicle Sensor Networks"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"17","author":[{"given":"Yousheng","family":"Zhou","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"College of Computer Science and Technology, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Chongqing 400065, China"},{"name":"College of Computer Science, Chongqing University, Chongqing 400044, China"},{"name":"School of Cyber Security and Information Law, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Chongqing 400065, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Xiaofeng","family":"Zhao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"College of Computer Science and Technology, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Chongqing 400065, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yi","family":"Jiang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"College of Computer Science and Technology, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Chongqing 400065, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Fengjun","family":"Shang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"College of Computer Science and Technology, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Chongqing 400065, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Shaojiang","family":"Deng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"College of Computer Science, Chongqing University, Chongqing 400044, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Xiaojun","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Electronic Engineering, Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,12,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"68","DOI":"10.1109\/MPRV.2006.84","article-title":"Smart Cars on Smart Roads: An IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society Update","volume":"5","author":"Wang","year":"2006","journal-title":"IEEE Pervasive Comput."},{"doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Bedi, P., and Jindal, V.
