The specific molecule structure and components of bR lead to its unique photocycle characteristic, which consists of several intermediates (bR, K, L, M, N, and O) and results in proton pump function. In this review, working principles and properties of bacteriorhodopsin are briefly introduced, as well as bR layer preparation method. After that, different bR-based devices divided into photochemical and photoelectric applications are shown. Finally, outlook and conclusions are drawn to inspire new design of high-performance bR-based biohybrid electronic devices.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s18051368","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,4,27]],"date-time":"2018-04-27T12:04:50Z","timestamp":1524830690000},"page":"1368","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":58,"title":["A Review on Bacteriorhodopsin-Based Bioelectronic Devices"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"18","author":[{"given":"Yu-Tao","family":"Li","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]},{"given":"Ye","family":"Tian","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]},{"given":"He","family":"Tian","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]},{"given":"Tao","family":"Tu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]},{"given":"Guang-Yang","family":"Gou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]},{"given":"Qian","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]},{"given":"Yan-Cong","family":"Qiao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]},{"given":"Yi","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]},{"given":"Tian-Ling","family":"Ren","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"},{"name":"Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList), Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,4,27]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"3201","DOI":"10.1002\/adma.200700419","article-title":"Organic bioelectronics","volume":"19","author":"Berggren","year":"2007","journal-title":"Adv.
