Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is a block cipher algorithm is commonly used in IoT devices. In this paper, the power consumption and cryptographic calculation requirement for different payload lengths and AES encryption types are analyzed. These types include software-based AES-CB, hardware-based AES-ECB (Electronic Codebook Mode), and hardware-based AES-CCM (Counter with CBC-MAC Mode). The calculation requirement and power consumption for these AES encryption types are measured on the Texas Instruments LAUNCHXL-CC1310 platform. The experimental results show that the hardware-based AES performs better than the software-based AES in terms of power consumption and calculation cycle requirements. In addition, in terms of AES mode selection, the AES-CCM-MIC64 mode may be a better choice if the IoT device is considering security, encryption calculation requirement, and low power consumption at the same time. However, if the IoT device is pursuing lower power and the payload length is generally less than 16 bytes, then AES-ECB could be considered.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s18061675","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,5,24]],"date-time":"2018-05-24T02:55:43Z","timestamp":1527130543000},"page":"1675","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":50,"title":["Power Consumption and Calculation Requirement Analysis of AES for WSN IoT"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"18","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1051-545X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Chung-Wen","family":"Hung","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical Engineering, National Yunlin University of Science & Technology, 123 University Road, Section 3, Douliou 64002, Yunlin, Taiwan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Wen-Ting","family":"Hsu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical Engineering, National Yunlin University of Science & Technology, 123 University Road, Section 3, Douliou 64002, Yunlin, Taiwan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,5,23]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"60","DOI":"10.1109\/MCOM.2018.1700625","article-title":"Integration of LoRaWAN and 4G\/5G for the Industrial Internet of Things","volume":"56","author":"Sendra","year":"2018","journal-title":"IEEE Commun.
