The basic idea is to use a set of microwave sensors to illuminate a region of interest and to measure the resulting axial component of the electric field. Measurements are then processed by means of a technique based on inverse-scattering, which provides an estimate map of the dielectric values of the area under examination, allowing to discriminate among possible targets. In order to initially evaluate the feasibility of the proposed approach, numerical results in a simulated environment are preliminarily considered and discussed. Furthermore, an initial test on experimental data in a simplified configuration is also presented.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s19061270","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,3,14]],"date-time":"2019-03-14T04:15:29Z","timestamp":1552536929000},"page":"1270","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Mapping the Dielectric Properties of Unknown Targets by Using a Network of Microwave Sensors: A Proof-of-Concept"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"19","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0948-6687","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Claudio","family":"Estatico","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mathematics, University of Genoa, 16146 Genoa, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6636-1448","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Alessandro","family":"Fedeli","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications Engineering, and Naval Architecture, University of Genoa, 16145 Genoa, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0002-979X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Gian Luigi","family":"Gragnani","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications Engineering, and Naval Architecture, University of Genoa, 16145 Genoa, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4926-7358","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Matteo","family":"Pastorino","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications Engineering, and Naval Architecture, University of Genoa, 16145 Genoa, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5291-462X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Andrea","family":"Randazzo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications Engineering, and Naval Architecture, University of Genoa, 16145 Genoa, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2019,3,13]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"8824","DOI":"10.3390\/s91108824","article-title":"Wireless Sensor Technologies and Applications","volume":"9","author":"Xia","year":"2009","journal-title":"Sensors"},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"50","DOI":"10.1109\/MAP.2012.6293950","article-title":"A study of the performance of wireless sensor networks operating with smart antennas","volume":"54","author":"Skiani","year":"2012","journal-title":"IEEE Antennas Propag.
