We used eight semiconductive gas sensors as a sensor array; analyzing their signals using machine learning; principal-component analysis (PCA), and linear-discriminant analysis (LDA) as dimensionality-reduction methods; k-nearest-neighbor (kNN) classification to evaluate the accuracy of target-gas determination; and random forest and ReliefF feature selections to choose appropriate sensors from our sensor array. PCA and LDA scores from the sensor responses to each target gas with contaminant gases were generally within the area of each target gas; hence; discrimination between each target gas was nearly achieved. Random forest and ReliefF efficiently reduced the required number of sensors, and kNN verified the quality of target-gas discrimination by each sensor set.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s20092687","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,5,8]],"date-time":"2020-05-08T11:26:00Z","timestamp":1588937160000},"page":"2687","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":32,"title":["Selective Detection of Target Volatile Organic Compounds in Contaminated Air Using Sensor Array with Machine Learning: Aging Notes and Mold Smells in Simulated Automobile Interior Contaminant Gases"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"20","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7267-8465","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Toshio","family":"Itoh","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Shimo-shidami, Moriyama-ku, Nagoya 463-8560, Japan"}]},{"given":"Yutaro","family":"Koyama","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Shimo-shidami, Moriyama-ku, Nagoya 463-8560, Japan"},{"name":"Department of Information Science and Technology, Aichi Prefectural University, 1522-3 Ibaragabasama, Nagakute 480-1198, Aichi, Japan"}]},{"given":"Woosuck","family":"Shin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Shimo-shidami, Moriyama-ku, Nagoya 463-8560, Japan"}]},{"given":"Takafumi","family":"Akamatsu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Shimo-shidami, Moriyama-ku, Nagoya 463-8560, Japan"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0674-3377","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Akihiro","family":"Tsuruta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Shimo-shidami, Moriyama-ku, Nagoya 463-8560, Japan"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4710-1306","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yoshitake","family":"Masuda","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Shimo-shidami, Moriyama-ku, Nagoya 463-8560, Japan"}]},{"given":"Kazuhisa","family":"Uchiyama","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"DENSO Corporation, 1-1, Showa-cho, Kariya 448-8661, Aichi, Japan"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,5,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"379","DOI":"10.5107\/sccj.34.379","article-title":"Development of care-products to prevent aged body odor","volume":"34","author":"Gozu","year":"2000","journal-title":"J.
