To date there are relatively few examples of its use in bacteriology. In this study we show that GLuc can be functionally expressed in the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus and furthermore show that it can be used as a biosensor for the agr quorum sensing (QS) system which employs autoinducing peptides to control virulence. GLuc was linked to the P3 promoter of the S. aureusagr operon. Biosensor strains were validated by evaluation of chemical agent-mediated activation and inhibition of agr. Use of GLuc enabled quantitative assessment of agr activity. This demonstrates the utility of Gaussia luciferase for in vitro monitoring of agr activation and inhibition.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s20154305","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,8,3]],"date-time":"2020-08-03T06:16:47Z","timestamp":1596435407000},"page":"4305","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Gaussia Luciferase as a Reporter for Quorum Sensing in Staphylococcus aureus"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"20","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6638-6493","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Isobel","family":"Blower","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Life Sciences, Biodiscovery Institute, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Carmen","family":"Tong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Life Sciences, Biodiscovery Institute, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK"},{"name":"School of Biosciences, Sutton Bonington Campus, University of Nottingham, Loughborough LE12 5RD, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9238-4755","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Xiaohui","family":"Sun","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Biosciences, Sutton Bonington Campus, University of Nottingham, Loughborough LE12 5RD, UK"},{"name":"College of Chemical Engineering, Huaqiao University, 668 Jimei Blvd, Xiamen 361021, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Ewan","family":"Murray","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Life Sciences, Biodiscovery Institute, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jeni","family":"Luckett","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Life Sciences, Biodiscovery Institute, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0488-825X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Weng","family":"Chan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Pharmacy, Biodiscovery Institute, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1920-5036","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Paul","family":"Williams","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Life Sciences, Biodiscovery Institute, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2250-1397","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Philip","family":"Hill","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Life Sciences, Biodiscovery Institute, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK"},{"name":"School of Biosciences, Sutton Bonington Campus, University of Nottingham, Loughborough LE12 5RD, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,8,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"184","DOI":"10.5001\/omj.2019.37","article-title":"WHO Global Priority Pathogens List: A Bibliometric Analysis of Medline-PubMed for Knowledge Mobilization to Infection Prevention and Control Practices in Bahrain","volume":"34","author":"Asokan","year":"2019","journal-title":"Oman Med.
