Radar performance was investigated in various real scenarios, including fire with strong flame, dense smoke and water vapour. A stereo video camera and a LIDAR were used as a comparison with other common types of sensors. The ability of radars to enable the visibility of objects in fire environments was proven. In all scenarios, the radar signal attenuation was measured, and in the case of steam was compared with theoretical calculations. The analysis of the experimental results allows us to conclude that there are good prospects for millimetre wave and Low Terahertz radar in the field of firefighting imaging equipment.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s21020439","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,1,10]],"date-time":"2021-01-10T23:03:42Z","timestamp":1610319822000},"page":"439","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":11,"title":["Experimental Evaluation of 79 and 300 GHz Radar Performance in Fire Environments"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"21","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8295-4734","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Aleksandr","family":"Bystrov","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Liam","family":"Daniel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Edward","family":"Hoare","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Fatemeh","family":"Norouzian","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Mikhail","family":"Cherniakov","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Marina","family":"Gashinova","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,1,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Daniel, L., Phippen, D., Hoare, E., Stove, A., Cherniakov, M., and Gashinova, M.
