However, a proper definition of the model geometry with its boundary conditions is required, together with the acquisition of the structure\u2019s strain field with optimized sensor networks. The iFEM model definition is not trivial in the case of complex structures, in particular, if sensors are not applied on the whole structure allowing just a partial definition of the input strain field. To overcome this issue, this research proposes a simplified iFEM model in which the geometrical complexity is reduced and boundary conditions are tuned with the superimposition of the effects to behave as the real structure. The procedure is assessed for a complex aeronautical structure, where the reference displacement field is first computed in a numerical framework with input strains coming from a direct finite element analysis, confirming the effectiveness of the iFEM based on a simplified geometry. Finally, the model is fed with experimentally acquired strain measurements and the performance of the method is assessed in presence of a high level of uncertainty.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s21041388","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,2,17]],"date-time":"2021-02-17T01:47:33Z","timestamp":1613526453000},"page":"1388","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":49,"title":["Shape Sensing of a Complex Aeronautical Structure with Inverse Finite Element Method"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"21","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9169-6781","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Daniele","family":"Oboe","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Mechanical Engineering Department, Politecnico di Milano, Via La Masa 1, 20156 Milano, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9355-099X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Luca","family":"Colombo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Mechanical Engineering Department, Politecnico di Milano, Via La Masa 1, 20156 Milano, Italy"}]},{"given":"Claudio","family":"Sbarufatti","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Mechanical Engineering Department, Politecnico di Milano, Via La Masa 1, 20156 Milano, Italy"}]},{"given":"Marco","family":"Giglio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Mechanical Engineering Department, Politecnico di Milano, Via La Masa 1, 20156 Milano, Italy"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,2,17]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Paris, D.E., and Trevino, L.
