The responses of four test surfaces of different roughness were measured and their normalized radar cross sections were estimated as a function of grazing angle and polarization. The Fraunhofer criterion was used as a guideline for determining the type of backscattering (specular and diffuse). The proposed experimental technique provides high accuracy of backscattering coefficient measurement depending on the frequency of the signal, polarization, and grazing angle. An empirical scattering model was used to provide a reference. To compare theoretical and experimental results of the signal scattering on test surfaces, the permittivity of sandpaper has been measured using time-domain spectroscopy. It was shown that the empirical methods for diffuse radar signal scattering developed for lower radar frequencies can be extended for the low THz range with sufficient accuracy. The results obtained will provide reference information for creating remote surface identification systems for automotive use, which will be of particular advantage in surface classification, object classification, and path determination in autonomous automotive vehicle operation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s21092954","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,25]],"date-time":"2021-04-25T02:12:57Z","timestamp":1619316777000},"page":"2954","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":29,"title":["Study of Low Terahertz Radar Signal Backscattering for Surface Identification"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"21","author":[{"given":"Shahrzad Minooee","family":"Sabery","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8295-4734","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Aleksandr","family":"Bystrov","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0256-6465","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Miguel","family":"Navarro-C\u00eda","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"},{"name":"School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Peter","family":"Gardner","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Marina","family":"Gashinova","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,23]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"169","DOI":"10.1109\/TTHZ.2011.2159556","article-title":"THz imaging radar for standoff personnel screening","volume":"1","author":"Cooper","year":"2011","journal-title":"IEEE Trans.
