Through precision design of the micropatch array structure geometry, we achieve a significantly enhanced reflectance (85%), a substantial diffraction (10%), and a much reduced transmittance (5%) for an array of only 15% surface metal coverage. This results in an efficient far-field optical coupling with promising practical implications for efficient mid-infrared photodetectors. Most importantly we find that the propagating electromagnetic fields are transiently concentrated around the gold micropatch array in a time duration of tens of ns, providing us with a novel efficient near-field optical coupling.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s21155203","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,8,1]],"date-time":"2021-08-01T21:44:32Z","timestamp":1627854272000},"page":"5203","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Time-Resolved FDTD and Experimental FTIR Study of Gold Micropatch Arrays for Wavelength-Selective Mid-Infrared Optical Coupling"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"21","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2442-1809","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ying","family":"Fu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Information Technology, Halmstad University, SE-301 18 Halmstad, Sweden"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2115-8942","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Tom","family":"Yager","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, LV-1063 Riga, Latvia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6291-6466","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"George","family":"Chikvaidze","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, LV-1063 Riga, Latvia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Srinivasan","family":"Iyer","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Senseair AB, SE-824 08 Delsbo, Sweden"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Qin","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB, Box 1070, SE-164 25 Kista, Sweden"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,7,31]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"639","DOI":"10.1038\/s41566-017-0004-4","article-title":"In-chip microstructures and photonic devices fabricated by nonlinear laser lithography deep inside silicon","volume":"11","author":"Tokel","year":"2017","journal-title":"Nat.
