It is therefore difficult for them to adapt to a discontinuous wall with particularly large gaps. Based on a modular design and inspired by leech peristalsis and internal soft-bone connection, a bionic crawling modular wall-climbing robot is proposed in this paper. The robot demonstrates the ability to handle variable load characteristics by carrying different numbers of modules. Multiple motion modules are coupled with the internal soft bone so that they work together, giving the robot variable-step-distance functionality. This paper establishes the robotic kinematics model, presents the finite element simulation analysis of the model, and introduces the design of the multi-module cooperative-motion method. Our experiments show that the advantage of variable step distance allows the robot not only to quickly climb and turn on walls, but also to cross discontinuous walls. The maximum climbing step distance of the robot can reach 3.6 times the length of the module and can span a discontinuous wall with a space of 150 mm; the load capacity increases with the number of modules in series. The maximum load that N modules can carry is about 1.3 times the self-weight.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s21227538","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,11,14]],"date-time":"2021-11-14T20:51:53Z","timestamp":1636923113000},"page":"7538","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["A Modular Cooperative Wall-Climbing Robot Based on Internal Soft Bone"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"21","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3111-7511","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Wenkai","family":"Huang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou 510006, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Wei","family":"Hu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou 510006, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Tao","family":"Zou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou 510006, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3854-8760","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Junlong","family":"Xiao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou 510006, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0492-0782","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Puwei","family":"Lu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou 510006, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Hongquan","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou 510006, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,11,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"483","DOI":"10.1089\/soro.2018.0115","article-title":"Reachability improvement of a climbing robot based on large deformations induced by tri-tube soft actuators","volume":"6","author":"Kanada","year":"2019","journal-title":"Soft Robot."},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"437","DOI":"10.5772\/5670","article-title":"Mechanical design and dynamics of an autonomous climbing robot for elliptic half-shell cleaning","volume":"4","author":"Zhang","year":"2007","journal-title":"Int.
