These estimates are very useful in many applications such as workload statistics and optimized job allocation in the field of logistics. However, due to the uncertainties of the wireless signal and corresponding positioning errors, accurately estimating movement distance still faces challenges. To address this issue, this paper proposes a movement status recognition-based distance estimating method to improve the accuracy. We divide the positioning traces into segments and use an encoder\u2013decoder deep learning-based model to determine the motion status of each segment. Then, the distances of these segments are calculated by different distance estimating methods based on their movement statuses. The experiments on the real positioning traces demonstrate the proposed method can precisely identify the movement status and significantly improve the distance estimating accuracy.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s22010346","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,1,9]],"date-time":"2022-01-09T23:08:26Z","timestamp":1641769706000},"page":"346","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Improving the Accuracy of Estimates of Indoor Distance Moved Using Deep Learning-Based Movement Status Recognition"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"22","author":[{"given":"Zhenjie","family":"Ma","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science and Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Wenjun","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science and Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4250-6208","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ke","family":"Shi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science and Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,1,4]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1372","DOI":"10.1049\/iet-com.2019.1059","article-title":"Survey on WiFi-based indoor positioning techniques","volume":"14","author":"Liu","year":"2020","journal-title":"IET Commun."},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"3483","DOI":"10.1109\/JSYST.2020.2969088","article-title":"BLE Beacons for Indoor Positioning at an Interactive IoT-Based Smart Museum","volume":"14","author":"Spachos","year":"2020","journal-title":"IEEE Syst.
