Federated learning enables machine learning (ML) models locally trained using private data to be aggregated into a global model. Split learning allows different portions of an ML model to be collaboratively trained on different workers in a learning framework. Federated learning and split learning, each have unique advantages and respective limitations, may complement each other toward ubiquitous intelligence in IoT. Therefore, the combination of federated learning and split learning recently became an active research area attracting extensive interest. In this article, we review the latest developments in federated learning and split learning and present a survey on the state-of-the-art technologies for combining these two learning methods in an edge computing-based IoT environment. We also identify some open problems and discuss possible directions for future research in this area with the hope of arousing the research community\u2019s interest in this emerging field.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s22165983","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,8,10]],"date-time":"2022-08-10T09:47:06Z","timestamp":1660124826000},"page":"5983","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":97,"title":["Combined Federated and Split Learning in Edge Computing for Ubiquitous Intelligence in Internet of Things: State-of-the-Art and Future Directions"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"22","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7832-1937","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Qiang","family":"Duan","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Sciences & Technology Department, Pennsylvania State University, Abington, PA 19001, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Shijing","family":"Hu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science, Fudan University, Shanghai 200438, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Ruijun","family":"Deng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science, Fudan University, Shanghai 200438, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Zhihui","family":"Lu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computer Science, Fudan University, Shanghai 200438, China"},{"name":"Shanghai Blockchain Engineering Research Center, Shanghai 200438, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,8,10]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Ali, O., Ishak, M.K., Bhatti, M.K.L., Khan, I., and Kim, K.I.
