To visualize and perform quantitative analysis on the football kick, we introduce a 3D motion analysis system based on a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) to reconstruct the motion trajectory, in the meantime analyzing the velocity and the highest point of the foot during the backswing. We build a signal processing system in MATLAB and standardize the experimental process, allowing users to reconstruct the foot trajectory and obtain information about the motion within a short time. This paper presents a system that directly analyzes the instep kicking motion rather than recognizing different motions or obtaining biomechanical parameters. For the instep kicking motion of path length around 3.63 m, the root mean square error (RMSE) is about 0.07 m. The RMSE of the foot velocity is 0.034 m\/s, which is around 0.45% of the maximum velocity. For the maximum velocity of the foot and the highest point of the backswing, the error is approximately 4% and 2.8%, respectively. With less complex hardware, our experimental results achieve excellent velocity accuracy.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s22166244","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,8,22]],"date-time":"2022-08-22T01:56:40Z","timestamp":1661133400000},"page":"6244","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":17,"title":["Motion Analysis of Football Kick Based on an IMU Sensor"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"22","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4867-1340","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Chun","family":"Yu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Interdisciplinary Program of Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu 300044, Taiwan"}]},{"given":"Ting-Yuan","family":"Huang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Interdisciplinary Program of Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu 300044, Taiwan"}]},{"given":"Hsi-Pin","family":"Ma","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu 300044, Taiwan"},{"name":"Center for Sport Science and Technology, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu 300044, Taiwan"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,8,19]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"38","DOI":"10.1109\/MCG.2005.140","article-title":"Pedestrian tracking with shoe-mounted inertial sensors","volume":"25","author":"Foxlin","year":"2005","journal-title":"IEEE Comput.
