The interaction of radiation with living matter is quantified and correlated with biological effects by dose. The Sievert is the most well-known quantity, and it is used with the equivalent and effective dose to minimize stochastic effects. However, Gray is the reference quantity for sizing tissue reactions that could occur under high-exposure conditions such as in a radiation emergency. The topics addressed in this review are the choice to move from Sievert to Gray, how the operational quantities for environmental and individual monitoring of the detectors should consider such a change of units, and why reference levels substitute dose levels in emergency exposure.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s23041918","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,2,9]],"date-time":"2023-02-09T01:37:07Z","timestamp":1675906627000},"page":"1918","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":8,"title":["Sievert or Gray: Dose Quantities and Protection Levels in Emergency Exposure"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"23","author":[{"given":"Chiara","family":"Ferrari","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department Industrial Engineering, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Via del Politecnico 1, 00133 Rome, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7659-5392","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Guglielmo","family":"Manenti","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Biomedicine and Prevention, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Via Montpellier 1, 00133 Rome, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4123-1716","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Andrea","family":"Malizia","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Biomedicine and Prevention, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Via Montpellier 1, 00133 Rome, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,2,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"ICRP (2021).
