The most crucial component of our approach is the proposed classification algorithm that is based on a sparse representation classification scheme. The basic assumption of our approach is that EEG features from a cognitive or affective process lie on a linear subspace. Hence, a test brain signal can be represented as a linear (or weighted) combination of brain signals from all classes in the training set. The class membership of the brain signals is determined by adopting the Sparse Bayesian Framework with graph-based priors over the weights of linear combination. Furthermore, the classification rule is constructed by using the residuals of linear combination. The experiments on a publicly available neuromarketing EEG dataset demonstrate the usefulness of our approach. For the two classification tasks offered by the employed dataset, namely affective state recognition and cognitive state recognition, the proposed classification scheme manages to achieve a higher classification accuracy compared to the baseline and state-of-the art methods (more than 8% improvement in classification accuracy).<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s23052480","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,2,24]],"date-time":"2023-02-24T02:03:26Z","timestamp":1677204206000},"page":"2480","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":19,"title":["A Sparse Representation Classification Scheme for the Recognition of Affective and Cognitive Brain Processes in Neuromarketing"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"23","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7092-8486","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Vangelis P.","family":"Oikonomou","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, CERTH-ITI, 6th km Charilaou-Thermi Road, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9116-4729","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Kostas","family":"Georgiadis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, CERTH-ITI, 6th km Charilaou-Thermi Road, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5474-9098","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Fotis","family":"Kalaganis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, CERTH-ITI, 6th km Charilaou-Thermi Road, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1367-5133","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Spiros","family":"Nikolopoulos","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, CERTH-ITI, 6th km Charilaou-Thermi Road, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6447-9020","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ioannis","family":"Kompatsiaris","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, CERTH-ITI, 6th km Charilaou-Thermi Road, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,2,23]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"66","DOI":"10.1109\/MC.2008.410","article-title":"Brain-Computer Interfaces, Virtual Reality, and Videogames","volume":"41","author":"Lotte","year":"2008","journal-title":"Computer"},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"125","DOI":"10.3389\/frobt.2020.00125","article-title":"Passive Brain-Computer Interfaces for Enhanced Human-Robot Interaction","volume":"7","author":"Alimardani","year":"2020","journal-title":"Front.
