In this paper, we present a semantic framework for detecting problems in ADLs execution, monitored through smart home sensors. In the context of this work, we conducted a pilot study, gathering raw data from various sensors and devices installed in a smart home environment. The proposed framework combines multiple Semantic Web technologies (i.e., ontology, RDF, triplestore) to handle and transform these raw data into meaningful representations, forming a knowledge graph. Subsequently, SPARQL queries are used to define and construct explicit rules to detect problematic behaviors in ADL execution, a procedure that leads to generating new implicit knowledge. Finally, all available results are visualized in a clinician dashboard. The proposed framework can monitor the deterioration of ADLs performance for people across the dementia spectrum by offering a comprehensive way for clinicians to describe problematic behaviors in the everyday life of an individual.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s24041107","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,2,8]],"date-time":"2024-02-08T03:36:17Z","timestamp":1707363377000},"page":"1107","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["A Semantic Framework to Detect Problems in Activities of Daily Living Monitored through Smart Home Sensors"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"24","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0004-9385-1855","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Giorgos","family":"Giannios","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, 6th Km Charilaou-Thermi, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8652-7628","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lampros","family":"Mpaltadoros","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, 6th Km Charilaou-Thermi, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0000-1958-1085","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Vasilis","family":"Alepopoulos","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, 6th Km Charilaou-Thermi, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1064-9439","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Margarita","family":"Grammatikopoulou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, 6th Km Charilaou-Thermi, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2389-4329","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Thanos G.","family":"Stavropoulos","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, 6th Km Charilaou-Thermi, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1367-5133","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Spiros","family":"Nikolopoulos","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, 6th Km Charilaou-Thermi, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5113-8366","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ioulietta","family":"Lazarou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, 6th Km Charilaou-Thermi, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2072-8010","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Magda","family":"Tsolaki","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Neurology I, Medical School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124 Thessaloniki, Greece"},{"name":"Greek Association of Alzheimer\u2019s Disease and Related Disorders (GAADRD), 54643 Thessaloniki, Greece"},{"name":"Laboratory of Neurodegenerative Diseases, Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation (CIRI-AUTh), Balkan Center, Buildings A & B, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6447-9020","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ioannis","family":"Kompatsiaris","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, 6th Km Charilaou-Thermi, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,2,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"Edemekong, P.F., Bomgaars, D.L., Sukumaran, S., and Schoo, C.
