Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2) is a heparin-binding angiogenic growth factor involved in various physiopathological processes, including tumor neovascularization. Accordingly, FGF2 is considered a target for antiangiogenic therapies. Thus, numerous natural\/synthetic compounds have been tested for their capacity to bind and sequester FGF2 in the extracellular environment preventing its interaction with cellular receptors. We have exploited surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique in search for antiangiogenic FGF2 binders\/antagonists. In this review we will summarize our experience in SPR-based angiogenesis research, with the aim to validate SPR as a first line screening for the identification of antiangiogenic compounds.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s90806471","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2009,8,20]],"date-time":"2009-08-20T16:36:45Z","timestamp":1250786205000},"page":"6471-6503","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":19,"title":["Exploiting Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) Technology for the Identification of Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF2) Antagonists Endowed with Antiangiogenic Activity"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"9","author":[{"given":"Marco","family":"Rusnati","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Unit of General Pathology and Immunology, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology, School of Medicine, University of Brescia, Brescia, 25123, Italy"}]},{"given":"Antonella","family":"Bugatti","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Unit of General Pathology and Immunology, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology, School of Medicine, University of Brescia, Brescia, 25123, Italy"}]},{"given":"Stefania","family":"Mitola","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Unit of General Pathology and Immunology, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology, School of Medicine, University of Brescia, Brescia, 25123, Italy"}]},{"given":"Daria","family":"Leali","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Unit of General Pathology and Immunology, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology, School of Medicine, University of Brescia, Brescia, 25123, Italy"}]},{"given":"Paolo","family":"Bergese","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Chemistry for Technologies Laboratory and Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Brescia, Brescia, 25123, Italy"}]},{"given":"Laura E.","family":"Depero","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Chemistry for Technologies Laboratory and Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Brescia, Brescia, 25123, Italy"}]},{"given":"Marco","family":"Presta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Unit of General Pathology and Immunology, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology, School of Medicine, University of Brescia, Brescia, 25123, Italy"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2009,8,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"249","DOI":"10.1038\/35025220","article-title":"Angiogenesis in cancer and other diseases","volume":"407","author":"Carmeliet","year":"2000","journal-title":"Nature"},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"27","DOI":"10.1038\/nm0195-27","article-title":"Angiogenesis in cancer, vascular, rheumatoid and other disease","volume":"1","author":"Folkman","year":"1995","journal-title":"Nat.
