In the last decade, new energy dissipating composites based on the use of certain complex fluids have flourished, due to their non-linear relationship between stress and strain rate depending on the flow\/field configuration. This manuscript intends to review the different approaches reported in the literature, analyses the fundamental physics behind them and assess their pros and cons from the perspective of their practical applications.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/app6080206","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,7,25]],"date-time":"2016-07-25T10:04:26Z","timestamp":1469441066000},"page":"206","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":39,"title":["Complex Fluids in Energy Dissipating Systems"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"6","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9763-6854","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Francisco","family":"Galindo-Rosales","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Centro de Estudos de Fen\u00f3menos de Transporte, Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, CP 4200-465 Porto, Portugal"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,7,25]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"(2013).
