Despite the many efforts to study this technology, most of the published papers focus on catalytic performance. Nevertheless, the development of a practical reaction system to close the NaBH4-H2 cycle remains a critical issue. Therefore, this work provides an overview of the research progress on the solutions for the by-product rehydrogenation leading to the regeneration of NaBH4 with economic potential. It is the first to compare and analyze the main types of processes to regenerate NaBH4: thermo-, mechano-, and electrochemical. Moreover, it considers the report by Demirci et al. on the main by-product of sodium borohydride hydrolysis. The published literature already reported efficient NaBH4 regeneration; however, the processes still need more improvements. Moreover, it is noteworthy that a transition to clean methods, through the years, was observed.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/en14123567","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,6,15]],"date-time":"2021-06-15T11:00:33Z","timestamp":1623754833000},"page":"3567","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":38,"title":["Rehydrogenation of Sodium Borates to Close the NaBH4-H2 Cycle: A Review"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"14","author":[{"given":"Helder X.","family":"Nunes","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Transport Phenomena Research Center, Chemical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Dr. Roberto Frias s\/n, 4200-465 Porto, Portugal"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4769-2342","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Diogo L.","family":"Silva","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Transport Phenomena Research Center, Chemical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Dr. Roberto Frias s\/n, 4200-465 Porto, Portugal"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7996-8142","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Carmen M.","family":"Rangel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Laboratory of Energy and Geology, Estrada da Portela, 1649-038 Lisboa, Portugal"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2937-5186","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Alexandra M.
