Several case studies covering various European coastal areas are considered for illustration purposes. These include different nearshore areas, such as the Portuguese coast, Sardinia Island or a coastal sector close to the Danube Delta in the Black Sea. For the case studies related to the Portuguese coast, it is noted that a marine energy farm may reduce the velocity of the longshore currents, with a complete attenuation of the current velocity for some case studies in the coastal area from Leixoes region being observed. For the area located close to the Danube Delta, it is estimated that in the proposed configuration, a marine energy farm would provide an efficient protection against the wave action, but it will have a relatively negligible impact on the longshore currents. Summarizing the results, we can conclude that a marine energy farm seems to be beneficial for coastal protection, even in the case of the enclosed areas, such as the Mediterranean or Black seas, where the erosion generated by the wave action represents a real problem.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/jmse8030228","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,3,24]],"date-time":"2020-03-24T13:04:04Z","timestamp":1585055044000},"page":"228","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":13,"title":["An Overview of the Expected Shoreline Impact of the Marine Energy Farms Operating in Different Coastal Environments"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"8","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6714-447X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Alina","family":"Raileanu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Dunarea de Jos University of Galati, 47 Domneasca Street, 800008 Galati, Romania"},{"name":"Danubius International Business School, 3 Galati Street, Danubius University, 800654 Galati, Romania"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9594-1388","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Florin","family":"Onea","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Dunarea de Jos University of Galati, 47 Domneasca Street, 800008 Galati, Romania"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6899-8442","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Eugen","family":"Rusu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Dunarea de Jos University of Galati, 47 Domneasca Street, 800008 Galati, Romania"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,3,24]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"58","DOI":"10.1016\/j.ocecoaman.2017.04.006","article-title":"Hard protection structures as a principal coastal erosion management strategy along the Caribbean coast of Colombia.
