Slabs with three different layer heights (6, 13, and 20 mm) are printed, and extracted cubes are subjected to compression (i) along the direction of printing, (ii) along the direction of layer build-up, and (iii) perpendicular to the above two directions. Digital image correlation (DIC) is used as a non-contact means to acquire the strain profiles. While the 3D printed specimens show lower strengths, as compared to cast specimens, when tested in all three directions, this effect can be reduced through the use of fiber reinforcement. Peak stress and peak strain-based anisotropy coefficients, which are linearly related, are used to characterize and quantify the directional dependence of peak stress and strain. Interface-parallel cracking is found to be the major failure mechanism, and anisotropy coefficients increase with an increase in layer height, which is attributable to the increasing significance of interfacial defects. Thus, orienting the weaker interfaces appropriately, through changes in printing direction, or strengthening them through material modifications (such as fiber reinforcement) or process changes (lower layer height, enables attainment of near-isotropy in 3D printed concrete elements.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/ma16155488","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,8,6]],"date-time":"2023-08-06T10:01:53Z","timestamp":1691316113000},"page":"5488","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":27,"title":["Anisotropy in Additively Manufactured Concrete Specimens under Compressive Loading\u2014Quantification of the Effects of Layer Height and Fiber Reinforcement"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"16","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5751-9514","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sahil","family":"Surehali","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Sustainable Engineering and Built Environment, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287, USA"}]},{"given":"Avinaya","family":"Tripathi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Sustainable Engineering and Built Environment, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-3174-0402","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Narayanan","family":"Neithalath","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Sustainable Engineering and Built Environment, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287, USA"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,8,6]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"209","DOI":"10.1080\/17452759.2016.1209867","article-title":"Additive manufacturing of concrete in construction: Potentials and challenges of 3D concrete printing","volume":"11","author":"Bos","year":"2016","journal-title":"Virtual Phys.
