The present work studied single-trial classification effectiveness in distinguishing between target and non-target responses considering two conditions of visual stimulation and the variation of the number of symbols presented to the user in a single-option visual frame. In addition, we also investigated the relationship between the classification results of target and non-target events when training and testing the machine-learning model with datasets containing different stimulation conditions and different number of symbols. To this end, we designed a P300 experimental protocol considering, as conditions of stimulation: the color highlighting or the superimposing of a cartoon face and from four to nine options. These experiments were carried out with 19 healthy subjects in 3 sessions. The results showed that the Event-Related Potentials (ERP) responses and the classification accuracy are stronger with cartoon faces as stimulus type and similar irrespective of the amount of options. In addition, the classification performance is reduced when using datasets with different type of stimulus, but it is similar when using datasets with different the number of symbols. These results have a special connotation for the design of systems, in which it is intended to elicit higher levels of evoked potentials and, at the same time, optimize training time.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s20247198","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,16]],"date-time":"2020-12-16T09:21:15Z","timestamp":1608110475000},"page":"7198","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Single-Option P300-BCI Performance Is Affected by Visual Stimulation Conditions"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"20","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9919-6514","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Juan David","family":"Chailloux Peguero","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Tecnologico de Monterrey, School of Engineering and Science, Monterrey, NL 64849, Mexico"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4355-886X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Omar","family":"Mendoza-Montoya","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Tecnologico de Monterrey, School of Engineering and Science, Monterrey, NL 64849, Mexico"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3377-0813","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Javier M.","family":"Antelis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Tecnologico de Monterrey, School of Engineering and Science, Monterrey, NL 64849, Mexico"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,16]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"157","DOI":"10.1146\/annurev.bb.02.060173.001105","article-title":"Toward Direct Brain-Computer Communication","volume":"2","author":"Vidal","year":"1973","journal-title":"Annu.
