This article evaluates the spectacularization techniques of technology and science displayed as if they were the only solution to the environmental crisis. Firstly, from a literature perspective, this article shows the evolution of science communication and the relationship between society and science over the last centuries. After that, it presents a critical view on the excessive optimism around technology and scientific advancement, arguing that the possible solutions to the environmental crisis cannot come exclusively through technology substitution. The article thus shows that there is today a clear distinction between science communication and the communication of science as a mass product, which is promoted today by different stakeholders to manipulate public opinion for different reasons. Finally, the article identifies some common elements of this phenomenon that we call technowashing, insofar as it aims at a laundering of responsibilities and harmful impacts of business and political decisions.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/soc12020064","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,4,4]],"date-time":"2022-04-04T09:49:41Z","timestamp":1649065781000},"page":"64","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":22,"title":["The Techno-Optimists of Climate Change: Science Communication or Technowashing?"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"12","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5693-410X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sofia","family":"Ribeiro","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, 1600-189 Lisboa, Portugal"}]},{"given":"Viriato","family":"Soromenho-Marques","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Centre of Philosophy, University of Lisbon, 1749-016 Lisboa, Portugal"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,4,4]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"(2021).
