Traditional teaching methods, typically expository and teacher-centred, have shown limited effectiveness in promoting meaningful learning in this domain. In response, this action research explored the potential of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), supported using concept maps and formative feedback tools, to foster a deeper understanding of Earth s history among 7th-grade students (n=47). Grounded in socio-constructivist learning theories and Ausubel s theory of meaningful learning, the intervention was designed to activate students prior knowledge and encourage conceptual reorganisation through active exploration and collaborative reasoning. Throughout five lessons implemented in two public school classes, students engaged in practical tasks, including fossil analysis, stratigraphic sequencing, and the digital construction of a geologic timeline. Data were collected through participant observation, snapshot reports, and concept maps. The results show a clear improvement in students ability to identify and relate key geological concepts, such as index and facies fossils, stratigraphic principles, and geologic eras. Concept maps revealed increasingly complex and accurate conceptual structures, while snapshot reports indicated heightened motivation and engagement throughout the intervention. The IBL approach also promoted scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and greater learner autonomy. These findings support the use of integrated active methodologies as a practical and transferable model for science education at the lower secondary level, particularly in addressing abstract geoscientific topics.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.35603\/sws.iscss.2025\/s05.75","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,2,5]],"date-time":"2026-02-05T10:06:46Z","timestamp":1770286006000},"page":"619-626","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["ENHANCING 7TH-GRADE STUDENTS UNDERSTANDING OF GEOLOGICAL TIME THROUGH INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING: AN ACTION RESEARCH APPROACH"],"prefix":"10.35603","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"Barbara","family":"Freitas","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Science Teaching Unit, Faculty of Sciences (FCUP), University of Porto","place":["Portugal"]}]},{"given":"Tiago","family":"Ribeiro","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Science Teaching Unit, Faculty of Sciences (FCUP), University of Porto\nInterdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR)","place":["Portugal"]}]},{"given":"Clara","family":"Vasconcelos","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Science Teaching Unit, Faculty of Sciences (FCUP), University of Porto\nInterdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR)","place":["Portugal"]}]}],"member":"21192","reference":[{"key":"ref=1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"[1] Silva P., Souza A., Rabelo C., Pinheiro C., Tavares F., Fonseca M., Ara jo S., Santos V., Metodologias ativas para o desenvolvimento de habilidades do s culo XXI, In: Inova o Educacional: Desafios e Perspectivas na Era Digital, Brasil, 2024, pp. 165 182.","DOI":"10.54033\/cadpedv21n4-021"},{"key":"ref=2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"[2] Chu S.
