The register is not exhaustive: it covers only general-knowledge online encyclopedias that, in the 21st century, have come to replace traditional multivolume reference works or represent new forms of their modern development. Major online encyclopedias typically offer continually updated information and therefore increasingly compete with digital media. The future of encyclopedics lies in the global growth of politically independent online reference platforms that provide people of different languages and cultures with access to authoritative, reliable, and accurate knowledge.
