Teleomorphs typically have hyaline, aseptate ascospores. However, some have been reported with brown ascospores and their taxonomic status is uncertain. A multi-gene approach\n (SSU, ITS, LSU, EF1-\u03b1 and \u03b2-tubulin) was used to resolve the correct phylogenetic position of the dark-spored '<jats:italic>Botryosphaeria<\/jats:italic>' teleomorphs and related asexual species. <jats:italic>Neodeightonia<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Phaeobotryon<\/jats:italic> are reinstated for species with brown ascospores that are either\n 1-septate (<jats:italic>Neodeightonia<\/jats:italic>) or 2-septate (<jats:italic>Phaeobotryon<\/jats:italic>). <jats:italic>Phaeobotryosphaeria<\/jats:italic> is reinstated for species with brown, aseptate ascospores that bear an apiculus at either end. The status of <jats:italic>Sphaeropsis<\/jats:italic> is clarified and shown to be the anamorph of <jats:italic>Phaeobotryosphaeria<\/jats:italic>.\n Two new genera, namely <jats:italic>Barriopsis<\/jats:italic> for species having brown, aseptate ascospores without apiculi and <jats:italic>Spencermartinsia<\/jats:italic> for species having brown, 1-septate ascospores with an apiculus at either end are introduced. Species of <jats:italic>Dothiorella<\/jats:italic> have brown, 1-septate ascospores and\n differ from <jats:italic>Spencermartinsia<\/jats:italic> in the absence of apiculi. These six genera can also be distinguished from one another based on morphological characters of their anamorphs.
