Several produce colonies in bright yellow to orange colours and have monoverticillate conidiophores, apart from <jats:italic>P. herquei<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>P. malachiteum<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>P. nodositatum<\/jats:italic>, which are biverticillate.\n The focus of this paper is to refine the concepts of the species currently accepted in the section and introduce five new species, named after the Dutch Royal family as <jats:italic>P. vanoranjei<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>P. maximae<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>P. amaliae<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>P. alexiae<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>P. arianeae<\/jats:italic>. <jats:italic>Penicillium vanoranjei<\/jats:italic>\n produces orange (Dutch = oranje) colonies in culture, and is named after Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand, 'Zijne Koninklijke Hoogheid de Prins van Oranje' (translated from Dutch as: 'His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange') and his family, to coincide with his coronation. We review\n the current taxonomic positions of <jats:italic>P. lilacinoechinulatum<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>P. nodositatum<\/jats:italic>, both currently considered to be synonyms of <jats:italic>P. bilaiae<\/jats:italic>. Sequence data generated in this study show that both species are phylogenetically distinct. <jats:italic>Penicillium lilacinoechinulatum<\/jats:italic> is closely\n related to <jats:italic>P. amaliae<\/jats:italic> sp. nov., whereas <jats:italic>P. nodositatum<\/jats:italic> does not belong to <jats:italic>Penicillium<\/jats:italic> sensu stricto. All species were compared morphologically and phylogenetically, based on \u03b2-tubulin and calmodulin DNA data.
