Multigene phylogeny based on the nuclear ITS, \u00df-tubulin and<jats:italic> HSP90<\/jats:italic> and the mitochondrial<jats:italic> cox1 <\/jats:italic> and<jats:italic> NADH1<\/jats:italic> gene sequences demonstrated that they belong\n to ITS Clade 7a with<jats:italic> P. europaea<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic> P. uniformis<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic> P. rubi<\/jats:italic> and<jats:italic> P. cambivora<\/jats:italic> being their closest relatives. All six new species differed from each other and from related species by a unique combination of morphological characters, the breeding system, cardinal temperatures\n and growth rates. Four homothallic species,<jats:italic> P. attenuata<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic> P. flexuosa<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic> P. formosa<\/jats:italic> and<jats:italic> P. intricata<\/jats:italic>, were isolated from rhizosphere soil of healthy forests of<jats:italic> Fagus hayatae<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic> Quercus glandulifera<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic> Q. tarokoensis<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic> Castanopsis carlesii<\/jats:italic>,\n <jats:italic> Chamaecyparis formosensis<\/jats:italic> and<jats:italic> Araucaria cunninghamii<\/jats:italic>. Two heterothallic species,<jats:italic> P. <\/jats:italic>x<jats:italic>heterohybrida<\/jats:italic> and<jats:italic> P. <\/jats:italic>x<jats:italic>incrassata<\/jats:italic>, were exclusively detected in three forest streams. All<jats:italic> P. <\/jats:italic>x<jats:italic>incrassata<\/jats:italic> isolates belonged to the A2 mating type while\n isolates of<jats:italic> P. <\/jats:italic>x<jats:italic>heterohybrida<\/jats:italic> represented both mating types with oospore abortion rates according to Mendelian ratios (4\u201333 %). Multiple heterozygous positions in their ITS, \u00df-tubulin and<jats:italic> HSP90<\/jats:italic> gene sequences indicate that<jats:italic> P. <\/jats:italic>x<jats:italic>heterohybrida<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>\n P. <\/jats:italic>x<jats:italic>incrassata<\/jats:italic> and<jats:italic> P. cambivora<\/jats:italic> are interspecific hybrids. Consequently,<jats:italic> P. cambivora<\/jats:italic> is redescribed as<jats:italic> P. <\/jats:italic>x<jats:italic>cambivora<\/jats:italic> without nomenclatural act. Pathogenicity trials on seedlings of<jats:italic> Castanea sativa<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic> Fagus sylvatica<\/jats:italic> and<jats:italic> Q. suber<\/jats:italic> indicate\n that all six new species might pose a potential threat to European
