When he  died, Cowley was the most famous poet in England, and his popularity continued throughout the eighteenth century. Yet he  has virtually disappeared today. All the essays in this volume explore, in different ways, the circumstances leading to Cowley's precipitous fall. As the contributors argue, Cowley's initial popularity and later fall in reputation have a similar origin: the experimental qualities, and the wide range, of his poetry. Cowley's works bridge disciplines (science, poetry), modes (prose, verse, translation, imitation), and genres (lyric, ode, epic) in unexpected, original ways. The same mixed, eccentric, digressive, and unfinished qualities that endeared Cowley's poetry to his contemporaries doomed his reputation for later readers unable to appreciate his idiosyncratic style and accept his defiance of the categories enshrined in literary histories. Ultimately, the contributors to this book reveal Cowley as a poet whose challenging writings fell between established categories and through the cracks of literary history. For these reasons, Cowley is the ideal poet for rediscovery in our interdisciplinary,  post-canonical age.<\/p>","DOI":"10.3828\/liverpool\/9781638040729.001.0001","type":"edited-book","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,24]],"date-time":"2024-05-24T18:23:29Z","timestamp":1716575009000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Abraham Cowley (1618-1667)"],"prefix":"10.3828","member":"2165","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,23]]},"container-title":[],"original-title":["Abraham Cowley (1618-1667)"],"language":"en","deposited":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,24]],"date-time":"2024-05-24T18:23:30Z","timestamp":1716575010000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/liverpool-scholarship-online\/book\/56809"}},"subtitle":["A Seventeenth-Century English Poet Recovered"],"editor":[{"given":"Michael","family":"Edson","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"editor","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Cedric D.","family":"Reverand II","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"editor","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2024,1,1]]},"ISBN":["9781638040729","9781802073294"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3828\/liverpool\/9781638040729.001.0001","relation":{"is-identical-to":[{"id-type":"doi","id":"10.2307\/jj.3079174","asserted-by":"subject"}]},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2024,1,1]]}}}
