We study Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> radiative transfer through simplified representations of the DCBH scenario. We find that gravitational heating of the collapsing cloud gives rise to a Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> cooling luminosity of up to <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <jats:tex-math>\n\n<\/jats:tex-math>\n                     <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"apj523426ieqn2.gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\/>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula> erg s<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>. Photoionization by a central source boosts the Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> luminosity to <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <jats:tex-math>\n\n<\/jats:tex-math>\n                     <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"apj523426ieqn3.gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\/>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula> erg s<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>, where <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <jats:tex-math>\n\n<\/jats:tex-math>\n                     <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"apj523426ieqn4.gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\/>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula> denotes the mass of the black hole powering this source. We predict that the width and velocity offsets of the Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> spectral line range from a few tens to few thousands km s<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>, depending sensitively on the evolutionary state of the cloud. We apply our predictions to observations of CR7, a luminous Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> emitter at <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <jats:tex-math>\n\n<\/jats:tex-math>\n                     <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"apj523426ieqn5.gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\/>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula>, which may be associated with a DCBH. If CR7 is powered by a black hole, then its Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> flux requires that <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <jats:tex-math>\n\n<\/jats:tex-math>\n                     <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"apj523426ieqn6.gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\/>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula>, which exceeds the mass of DCBHs when they first form. The observed width of the Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> spectrum favors the presence of only a low column density of hydrogen, <jats:inline-formula>\n                     <jats:tex-math>\n\n<\/jats:tex-math>\n                     <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"apj523426ieqn7.gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\/>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula>. The shape of the Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> spectrum indicates that this gas is outflowing. These requirements imply that if CR7 harbors a DCBH, then the physical conditions that enabled its formation have been mostly erased, which is in agreement with theoretical expectations. These constraints weaken if the observed Ly<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> emission represents the central peak of a more extended
