However, such information is fundamental both for constructing appropriate conservation approaches, as well as to identify biogeographical patterns. Here we assessed the origins and taxonomic status of the <jats:italic>Hemidactylus<\/jats:italic> geckos found on the \u00celes \u00c9parses, disjunct small islands of the western Indian Ocean located around Madagascar, using partial mitochondrial DNA sequences. <jats:italic>Hemidactylus platycephalus<\/jats:italic> was confirmed on Juan de Nova, presumed introduced from continental Africa. The <jats:italic>H. mabouia-mercatorius<\/jats:italic> complex was identified on Juan de Nova, Europa, Tromelin, and Grande Glorieuse, with <jats:italic>H. mabouia<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>sensu stricto<\/jats:italic>) on Juan de Nova and <jats:italic>H. mercatorius<\/jats:italic> on Europa, from where it is likely to have been introduced to Tromelin.
