Studies of rapidly changing features can be carried out using traditional field monitoring techniques, perhaps aided by airborne or satellite imagery if the scale of change is sufficiently large. Less dynamic surfaces do not lend themselves to such methods since, over the time-scale of traditional research projects, the amount of change will be less than the known errors in the measurement techniques. This paper describes the use of historical aerial photographs to study changes in an inter-tidal environment, around Langstone Harbour and Chichester Harbour (U.K.), and discusses the advantages and limitations of this data source.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.4000\/cybergeo.4019","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2011,10,13]],"date-time":"2011-10-13T15:51:34Z","timestamp":1318521094000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["The use of historical photography in environmental studies"],"prefix":"10.4000","author":[{"given":"Peter","family":"Collier","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Geography University of Portsmouth Portsmouth Hants PO4 0PL United Kingdom"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Rob","family":"Inkpen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Geography University of Portsmouth Portsmouth Hants PO4 0PL United Kingdom"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Dominic","family":"Fontana","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Geography University of Portsmouth Portsmouth Hants PO4 0PL United Kingdom"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"2399","reference":[{"key":"ref0","unstructured":"Budd J.T.C., 1980, Survey of the Intertidal Vegetation of Langstone Harbour, Internal Report, Southern Water Authority."},{"key":"ref1","unstructured":"Budd J.T.C., 1981, Survey of the Intertidal Vegetation of Langstone Harbour, Internal Report, Southern Water Authority."},{"key":"ref2","unstructured":"Budd J.T.C., 1982, Survey of the Intertidal Vegetation of Langstone Harbour, Internal Report, Southern Water Authority."},{"key":"ref3","unstructured":"Budd J.T.C., 1983, Survey of the Intertidal Vegetation of Langstone Harbour, Internal Report, Southern Water Authority."},{"key":"ref4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1179\/caj.1995.32.2.137"},{"key":"ref5","unstructured":"Collier P. and Fontana D, 1995, Report to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds on Environmental Change in Langstone Harbour."},{"key":"ref6","unstructured":"Collier P., Fontana D. and Pye, K., 1996, Aerial CIR Image Interpretation in Chichester and Langstone Harbours, 1994.
