Isto diz respeito tanto \u00e0 maneira como ele pr\u00f3prio olhou para a Europa do seu tempo, bem como a algumas no\u00e7\u00f5es suas que revelam uma atualidade surpreendente. Esta lacuna surpreende, uma vez que Pessoa foi sempre um atento observador da modernidade europeia. Embora bastante fragment\u00e1ria, Pessoa esbo\u00e7ou a no\u00e7\u00e3o de um cosmopolitismo europeu, que mais tarde se tornou centro de debates sociol\u00f3gicos e pol\u00edticos, sobretudo a partir de alguns textos de Ulrich Beck.
