Este artigo defende que os caminhos de ferro estimularam o crescimento da popula\u00e7\u00e3o nas \u00e1reas servidas por esta infraestrutura, contribu\u00edram para o desenvolvimento urbano e incentivaram as migra\u00e7\u00f5es internas. Por\u00e9m, os seus efeitos foram desiguais, pois a ferrovia beneficiou as zonas j\u00e1 pr\u00f3speras (Norte Atl\u00e2ntico), tendo uma influ\u00eancia negativa em regi\u00f5es com maiores debilidades estruturais (Norte Interior).
