Meaning negotiation routines in face-to-face classroom interactions have been identified by Varonis and Gass. Smith expands the model to adapt it to text chat CMC environments. In the past decade, synchronous audio CMC has become commonly used for online language teaching, but its affordances are different from text chat CMC. Therefore, it is necessary to examine what meaning negotiation routines are in language learners' oral interactions in this new online learning environment. In this study, participants were invited to complete two information gap tasks in which target lexical items were embedded to elicit learners' negotiation for meaning and then they participated in a stimulated recall interview. Based on the analysis of students' oral interactions in synchronous audio CMC, the authors propose two new possible stages in negotiation for meaning routines and demonstrate how different modes of communication can affect language learning online.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.4018\/ijcallt.2018070103","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,9,28]],"date-time":"2018-09-28T14:45:25Z","timestamp":1538145925000},"page":"50-72","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Negotiation for Meaning Routines in Audio SCMC Interactions"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"8","author":[{"given":"Chenxi (Cecilia)","family":"Li","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK"}]},{"given":"Tim","family":"Lewis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"IJCALLT.2018070103-0","first-page":"29","article-title":"Do second language learners benefit from interacting with each other?","author":"R.Adams","year":"2007","journal-title":"Conversational interaction in second language acquisition"},{"key":"IJCALLT.2018070103-1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0346-251X(02)00071-4"},{"key":"IJCALLT.2018070103-2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.4018\/ijcallt.2011040101"},{"issue":"1","key":"IJCALLT.2018070103-3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"19","DOI":"10.64152\/10125\/25002","article-title":"CALL in the year 2000: Still in search of research paradigms?","volume":"1","author":"C.Chapelle","year":"1997","journal-title":"Language Learning & Technology"},{"issue":"3","key":"IJCALLT.2018070103-4","first-page":"65","article-title":"Foreign lexical acquisition in SCMC.","volume":"35","author":"H.Chen","year":"2014","journal-title":"Foreign Language Education"},{"issue":"4","key":"IJCALLT.2018070103-5","first-page":"148","article-title":"The effects of task types on the quality and quantity of meaning negotiation.","volume":"7","author":"Z.Cheng","year":"2008","journal-title":"Journal of Shaoyang University"},{"key":"IJCALLT.2018070103-6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.17507\/jltr.0602.02"},{"issue":"1","key":"IJCALLT.2018070103-7","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"49","DOI":"10.1558\/cj.33156","article-title":"Synthesizing the practice of SCMC-based telecollaboration: A scoping review.","volume":"35","author":"J.
