Two classes of primary school students participated in the experiment. Using activity theory as an analytical framework, it is found that underlying tensions provided rich insights into system dynamics and that technological affordances could be limited by mismatches between the Tools themselves, and between Tools and the ways that were used by learners or arranged by the instructor. The subtle human factors present in the use of technologies should be carefully considered. The influence of mobile devices on learner experiences in experiential learning is also thoroughly discussed.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/ijdet.2014040106","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,4]],"date-time":"2014-09-04T19:28:29Z","timestamp":1409858909000},"page":"104-117","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["Exploration of Tensions in a Mobile-Technology Supported Fieldtrip"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"Chih-Hung","family":"Lai","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Dong Hwa University, Taipei, Taiwan"}]},{"given":"Fei-Ching","family":"Chen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate Institute of Learning and Instruction, National Central University, Zhongli, Taiwan"}]},{"given":"Jie-Chi","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate Institute of Network Learning Technology, National Central University, Zhongli, Taiwan"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-0","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/j.2168-9830.2009.tb01025.x"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1207\/S15327809JLS1104_3"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1207\/S15327884MCA0902_02"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/01580370903534355"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1207\/s15327809jls1503_1"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1142\/S1793206806000032"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.intcom.2009.01.001"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1502800.1502804"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-8","author":"Y.Engestr\u00f6m","year":"1987","journal-title":"Learning by Expanding"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/CBO9780511625510.004"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/1350507611433101"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-11","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1467-8535.2010.01123.x"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-12","author":"D.Kolb","year":"1984","journal-title":"Experiential learning: Experience as the source of learning and development"},{"key":"ijdet.2014040106-13","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Kuutti, K.
