In addition, this study explored how game design and peer critique activities influenced their perceptions of digital game-based learning environments and learning through game design. Qualitative data were collected from fifty game design documents and participant responses to reflection questions. The analysis of game design documents showed that the majority of the participants designed immersive game-based learning environments where players are required to use higher order thinking and real-world skills as well as academic content to complete missions or solve problems. The results of this study provide important implications for teacher professional development as well as for educational game development.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/ijgbl.2017100104","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,18]],"date-time":"2017-08-18T12:18:19Z","timestamp":1503058699000},"page":"73-85","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Examining the Characteristics of Digital Learning Games Designed by In-service Teachers"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"7","author":[{"given":"Yun-Jo","family":"An","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of West Georgia, Carrollton, Georgia"}]},{"given":"Li","family":"Cao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of West Georgia, Carrollton, Georgia"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"issue":"1","key":"IJGBL.2017100104-0","article-title":"Teaching to teach (with) game design: Game design and learning workshops for preservice teachers.","volume":"16","author":"M.Akcaoglu","year":"2016","journal-title":"Contemporary Issues in Technology & Teacher Education"},{"key":"IJGBL.2017100104-1","article-title":"Games to promote inquiry learning","author":"Y.An","year":"2015","journal-title":"Encyclopedia of Educational Technology"},{"issue":"3","key":"IJGBL.2017100104-2","first-page":"43","article-title":"Finding that SPECIAL PLACE: Designing digital game-based learning environments.","volume":"53","author":"Y.An","year":"2009","journal-title":"TechTrends"},{"issue":"2","key":"IJGBL.2017100104-3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"162","DOI":"10.1007\/s11528-016-0122-8","article-title":"The effects of game design experience on teachers\u2019 attitudes and perceptions regarding the use of digital games in the classroom.","volume":"61","author":"Y.An","year":"2017","journal-title":"TechTrends"},{"key":"IJGBL.2017100104-4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1467-8535.2007.00711.x"},{"issue":"1","key":"IJGBL.2017100104-5","first-page":"70","article-title":"Modding the global classroom?
