To this end, they discuss the design of TavCats\u2014a virtual role-playing game that aimed to engage children (ages 9 to 13) in understanding, acting upon, and coming to value being caring and compassionate. The authors' discussion takes the form of a design narrative through which they explain the connections between their theoretical commitments and design decisions. Specifically, they review four design elements they utilized in their design work: identity claims, boundary objects, profession trajectories, and cyclic gameplay. The authors briefly share their observations from a pilot study with children in an afterschool setting to illustrate how their design work might be realized in the world. They conclude their paper with a discussion of the implications of their work for designing educational video games for supporting social dispositions as well as academic learning, and future directions.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/ijgcms.2017010104","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,2,7]],"date-time":"2017-02-07T12:11:13Z","timestamp":1486469473000},"page":"61-76","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Educational Games to Support Caring and Compassion Among Youth"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"9","author":[{"given":"Sinem","family":"Siyahhan","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"California State University, San Marcos, CA, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Adam A.","family":"Ingram-Goble","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Sasha","family":"Barab","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Maria","family":"Solomou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Cyprus University of Technology, Lemesos, Cyprus"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"IJGCMS.2017010104-0","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3102\/0034654311404435"},{"key":"IJGCMS.2017010104-1","unstructured":"Aristotle., & Butcher, S.
