Over-prescription and distribution of opioids cost the national healthcare system over $78 billion every year. Problems persist in every stage of the process, from doctors prescribing the medication to the pharmacists fulfilling prescriptions. These problems arise from a combination of factors, including lack of accountability, transparency, and reliability in the current prescription drug monitoring programs. This work provides three key contributions to research on a technical approach to mitigate the opioid epidemic. First, the authors pinpoint key problems in the current opioid prescription system. Second, they propose an integrated approach for addressing the problems by leveraging distributed ledgers, focusing on blockchain technology. Third, the authors describe the structure and functionality of OpTrak that allows a consortium of care providers to exchange patient prescription data securely.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.4018\/ijissc.2019040104","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,2,26]],"date-time":"2019-02-26T16:33:44Z","timestamp":1551198824000},"page":"45-61","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":8,"title":["OpTrak"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"10","author":[{"given":"Peng","family":"Zhang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Vanderbilt University, USA"}]},{"given":"Breck","family":"Stodghill","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Vanderbilt University, USA"}]},{"given":"Cory","family":"Pitt","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Vanderbilt University, USA"}]},{"given":"Cavin","family":"Briody","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Vanderbilt University, USA"}]},{"given":"Douglas C.","family":"Schmidt","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Vanderbilt University, USA"}]},{"given":"Jules","family":"White","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Vanderbilt University, USA"}]},{"given":"Alan","family":"Pitt","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Barrow Neurological Institute, USA"}]},{"given":"Kelly","family":"Aldrich","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Center for Medical Interoperability, USA"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"IJISSC.2019040104-0","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3055518.3055530"},{"key":"IJISSC.2019040104-1","unstructured":"Appriss, Inc.
