Instead physicians will typically have their own autonomous systems that support internal processes. Traditional activity-oriented workflow models or content-oriented process models do not resolve inter-institutional integration challenges. The authors present the a-Flow approach for distributed process management, which enables ad hoc collaboration via active electronic documents without the need to integrate local systems. A distributed case file, the a-Doc, is used to coordinate cooperating parties. Using this case file does not require any preinstalled system components, so true ad-hoc information interchange is enabled. The case file contains both, the inter-organizational process schema as a document, as well as arbitrary content documents that are shared among the cooperating parties. To illustrate the approach an inter-institutional use case is provided by cooperative breast-cancer treatment. The authors explain the rationale behind separating content, decision support, and coordination work and in large-scale inter-institutional scenarios its necessary to decouple collaboration functionality from the existing applications and to resolve the duality between content-oriented and activity-oriented process models.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/ijkbo.2012100104","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2012,10,22]],"date-time":"2012-10-22T16:14:54Z","timestamp":1350922494000},"page":"52-68","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["The Alpha-Flow Approach to Inter-Institutional Process Support in Healthcare"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"2","author":[{"given":"Christoph P.","family":"Neumann","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen, Germany"}]},{"given":"Richard","family":"Lenz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen, Germany"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"ijkbo.2012100104-0","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.4018\/ijkbo.2011010103"},{"key":"ijkbo.2012100104-1","author":"R.Berger","year":"1997","journal-title":"Telematik im Gesundheitswesen \u2013 Perspektiven der Telemedizin in Deutschland"},{"key":"ijkbo.2012100104-2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s00129-003-1426-2"},{"key":"ijkbo.2012100104-3","unstructured":"Cohn, D., & Hull, R.
