However, new challenges presented by a new, globalized economy, have put a new focus on these skills in the engineering workplace. Process skills present a great challenge for educators and practicing engineers alike because they are hard to define explicitly, hard to teach, and even harder to develop as a student. They depend on attitudes and values as much as they depend on content knowledge. For educators the challenge is three-fold: how to clearly define these skills, how to assess them, and how to effectively teach them to their students. The paper discusses a course design process that facilitates the development of these skills to help prepare engineering and technology students for the challenges of the 21st century workplace.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/ijqaete.2015100101","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,7,5]],"date-time":"2016-07-05T15:18:02Z","timestamp":1467731882000},"page":"1-26","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Preparing Engineers for the 21st Century"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"4","author":[{"given":"Nikos J.","family":"Mourtos","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"San Jose State University, San Jose, CA, USA"}]}],"member":"2432","container-title":["International Journal of Quality Assurance in Engineering and Technology Education"],"original-title":[],"language":"ng","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.igi-global.com\/viewtitle.aspx?TitleId=159198","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2022,6,1]],"date-time":"2022-06-01T17:36:17Z","timestamp":1654104977000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/services.igi-global.com\/resolvedoi\/resolve.aspx?doi=10.4018\/IJQAETE.2015100101"}},"subtitle":["How to Teach Engineering Students Process Skills"],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2015,10,1]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"4","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2015,10]]}},"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.4018\/ijqaete.2015100101","relation":{},"ISSN":["2155-496X","2155-4978"],"issn-type":[{"value":"2155-496X","type":"print"},{"value":"2155-4978","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2015,10,1]]}}}
