In designing such experiences, it is essential that users are regularly engaged in a collaborative design process. However, engaging in design, development, and evaluation can in itself provide a learning experience. Here, the authors present an approach to engaging children in the design, development and evaluation of a virtual learning environment, specifically a serious game, focused on inculcating empathy, ethical reasoning, and reflection for coping with bullying. It was demonstrated that children's involvement not only contributed to an improved virtual environment, but significantly engaging in the design process provided children with a novel and effective learning opportunity.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.4018\/ijvple.2020070104","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,4,24]],"date-time":"2020-04-24T18:49:07Z","timestamp":1587754147000},"page":"50-65","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":11,"title":["Design, Development, and Usability of a Virtual Environment on Moral, Social, and Emotional Leaning"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"10","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8002-7101","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Samiullah","family":"Paracha","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Sunderland, UK"}]},{"given":"Lynne","family":"Hall","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Sunderland, UK"}]},{"given":"Kathy","family":"Clawson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Sunderland, UK"}]},{"given":"Nicole","family":"Mitsche","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Sunderland, UK"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"IJVPLE.2020070104-0","author":"V.Aleven","year":"2006","journal-title":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Ill-Defined Domains at the 8th International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems (Preface)"},{"key":"IJVPLE.2020070104-1","author":"A.Boal","year":"1993","journal-title":"Theater of the Oppressed"},{"key":"IJVPLE.2020070104-2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Borges, S., Durelli, V., Reis, H., & Isotani, S.
