Since many of these issues parallel earlier debates on genetically modified foods, it seems highly likely that similar decision-making tools and approaches will be used for governing nano-based food. A key decision-making tool used by regulators in North America and Europe involves application of the principle of substantial equivalence. In this paper, the authors argue that substantial equivalence is an inapt arbiter of equivalence for nano-based food, and that it incorporates a fundamental flaw in logic known as a category-mistake.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/jnmc.2010070103","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2011,10,19]],"date-time":"2011-10-19T11:56:45Z","timestamp":1319025405000},"page":"46-54","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Nano-Based Food and Substantial Equivalence"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"2","author":[{"given":"Jenna","family":"Woodrow","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Thompson Rivers University, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Michael D.","family":"Mehta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Thompson Rivers University, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"jnmc.2010070103-0","author":"J.Aristotle","year":"1963","journal-title":"Categories and De Interpretatione"},{"key":"jnmc.2010070103-1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1467-7652.2006.00197.x"},{"key":"jnmc.2010070103-2","first-page":"73","article-title":"Individualism and the Mental","author":"T.Burge","year":"1979","journal-title":"Contemporary Perspectives in the Philosophy of Language"},{"key":"jnmc.2010070103-3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.0503955102"},{"key":"jnmc.2010070103-4","first-page":"140","article-title":"Risk management and regulation in an emerging technology","author":"R.Clift","year":"2006","journal-title":"Nanotechnology: Risk, Ethics and Law"},{"key":"jnmc.2010070103-5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s11051-004-3394-4"},{"key":"jnmc.2010070103-6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.ecolecon.2009.03.008"},{"key":"jnmc.2010070103-7","unstructured":"Dayton, E.
