Until recently most people associated nanotechnology with science fiction-based accounts that tended to focus on fantastical devices and applications. Due to developments in nanoscience (e.g., greater control over atomic structure and relatively better predictability of nanoscale properties), nanotechnology has entered the commercial realm, and it has begun simultaneously to stimulate the development of new governance frameworks. In this article, the author discusses potential benefits and risks and examines a select set of frameworks for governing this technology.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/jnmc.2011040101","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,2,5]],"date-time":"2013-02-05T17:31:56Z","timestamp":1360085516000},"page":"1-11","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Understanding Advances in Nanotechnology"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"3","author":[{"given":"Michael D.","family":"Mehta","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Thompson Rivers University, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-0","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1093\/mutage\/gep003"},{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.aquatox.2009.10.019"},{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.scitotenv.2007.10.010"},{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.yrtph.2011.02.002"},{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-4","first-page":"140","article-title":"Risk management and regulation in an emerging technology","author":"R.Clift","year":"2006","journal-title":"Nanotechnology: Risk, ethics and law"},{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s11051-004-3394-4"},{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1038\/nbt875"},{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1289\/ehp.8284"},{"key":"jnmc.2011040101-8","first-page":"154","article-title":"Nanotechnology and nanoparticle toxicity: A case for precaution","author":"C.
