Information security training can be used as an effective tool to improve users\u2019 secure behavior and thus alleviate security breaches. Via the lens of learning, working memory, and cognitive load theories, this research examines how to improve the effectiveness of security training through decreasing extraneous stimuli in the presentation of online security training. The authors conducted a realistic laboratory experiment to examine the influence of training with different levels of extraneous stimuli on secure behavior. They found that training presented with low levels of extraneous stimuli improved secure behavior more than training presented with high levels. The results question the effectiveness of elaborate training programs, and rather suggest that simple, direct training modules are most effective.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/joeuc.2013070104","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,8,22]],"date-time":"2013-08-22T14:20:32Z","timestamp":1377181232000},"page":"52-66","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Simplicity is Bliss"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"25","author":[{"given":"Jeffrey L.","family":"Jenkins","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Marriott School of Management, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Alexandra","family":"Durcikova","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Price College of Business, The University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Mary B.","family":"Burns","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Jake Jabs College of Business & Entrepreneurship, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"joeuc.2013070104-0","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/322796.322806"},{"issue":"1","key":"joeuc.2013070104-1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"43","DOI":"10.2307\/25148828","article-title":"Extending the understanding of end user information systems satisfaction formation: An equitable needs fulfillment model approach.","volume":"32","author":"N.Au","year":"2008","journal-title":"Management Information Systems Quarterly"},{"key":"joeuc.2013070104-2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1006\/brcg.1998.1092"},{"key":"joeuc.2013070104-3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1057\/ejis.2009.8"},{"key":"joeuc.2013070104-4","unstructured":"Burns, M.
