Game modding has become a leading method for developing games by customizing or creating Open Source Software extensions to game software in general, and particularly to proprietary closed source software games. What, why, and how OSS and closed source software come together within an application system is the subject for this study. Observational and qualitative is used to highlight current practices and issues that can be associated with software engineering and game studies foundations with multiple examples of different game mods and modding practices are identified throughout this study.<\/p>","DOI":"10.4018\/jossp.2011070103","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,1,9]],"date-time":"2013-01-09T15:56:53Z","timestamp":1357747013000},"page":"36-47","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Modding as an Open Source Approach to Extending Computer Game Systems"],"prefix":"10.4018","volume":"3","author":[{"given":"Walt","family":"Scacchi","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of California, Irvine, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"2432","reference":[{"key":"jossp.2011070103-0","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Alspaugh, T.
