{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,10]],"date-time":"2026-06-10T15:24:15Z","timestamp":1781105055114,"version":"3.54.1"},"reference-count":17,"publisher":"IGI Global Scientific Publishing","issue":"3","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2012,7,1]]},"abstract":"<p>This paper presents the description of an email Tandem exchange project conducted between 94 intermediate-level students (47 pairs) from Columbia University\/Barnard College in New York and Universidad Auton\u00f3ma de Madrid in Spain during the Fall Semester 2010. There were several goals to this project: to help improve students\u2019 writing skills; to encourage them to learn about culture through authentic (understood as \u2018direct contact with a native speaker\u2019) and real exposure to the target language; to foster progress in their use of the target languages through peer-to-peer corrections; and to take an active part in their own learning through self-assessment. Based on students\u2019 opinions, this project had a very positive impact in the way they viewed the foreign\/target culture on both sides of the Atlantic.
